Twelve iconic ways to spend a day in Bend, Oregon
Bend earns its reputation as the outdoor capital of Central Oregon by stacking world-class destinations within minutes of downtown. Mt. Bachelor rises above the southwestern skyline with 4,318 feet of vertical and one of the longest ski seasons in North America. The Deschutes River threads through the heart of town — paddleboards, drift boats, and the famous summer float take you straight from the Old Mill District to Riverbend Park. East of the city, Pilot Butte gives you a 360-degree view of the Cascades on a 30-minute walk. North to Smith Rock State Park takes 35 minutes and drops you into the birthplace of American sport climbing.
Beyond the headliners, Bend rewards repeat visitors. Phil's Trail network has more than 70 miles of singletrack, much of it 10 minutes from town. The Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway climbs past Sparks, Devil's, and Hosmer Lakes for trout fishing and paddleboarding under volcanic peaks. Tumalo Falls drops 89 feet just 14 miles up Skyliners Road. The Bend Ale Trail threads more than 20 breweries with passport stamps and a free souvenir cup. Winter snowshoers head to Virginia Meissner Sno-Park for groomed Nordic trails. Stargazers drive to the Pine Mountain Observatory or join Sunriver's Oregon Observatory, both designated Dark Sky locations.
The activities below are organized by season and difficulty. Each card includes the best time to go, the trailhead or address, the typical time commitment, and what to bring.
